Green is Gorgeous at Miss Malibu USA

Contestant puts Mother Earth in the spotlight

LOS ANGELES – August 15, 2012

Beautiful young women gather this weekend for the 8th Annual Miss Malibu Pageant, one of Malibu's premier annual events held at the Malibu Golf Club. This year, Miss Malibu Contestant, Lauren Selman, 26, is putting Mother Earth front and center as she combines her passion for the environment with pageantry and shows that being green can be gorgeous. From her dress to what she says, she started an eco-campaign to promote sustainable and healthy living.

"Pageants have traditionally always been about the celebration of beautiful women, glamorous gowns, crowns and all things Diva, but with the enthusiasm of eco friendly lifestyles throughout our community it just makes sense to include the awareness within our pageant". Said Kristen Bradford, CEO of Crown Diva and Miss Malibu USA and Miss Santa Monica USA Pageants.

Lauren invited Eco Stylist Taryn Hipwell of EcoDivasTV.com and former Miss Cranberry 1st Runner up to help her find a pageant perfect eco look. “Lauren is gorgeous whether she is wearing a garbage dumpster diving suit or an organic gown with eco-couture vintage bling, which is why I applaud her for utilizing the Miss Malibu Pageant as a platform to affect change and be a positive role model for young women.”

Taryn has pulled together a selection of local and sustainable designers for the competition. "I think it is great to blend a natural and glam look into pageantry," says sustainable dress designer Lindee Daniel. "I like to use all things natural and enjoy using wild organic vegetarian silks and cottons and the natural color of the fibers or earth dyes free."

On Sunday, Lauren will proudly walk in an all organic dress by Lindee Daniel, Mink vegan shoes, Margaret Rowe one-of-a-kind vintage couture jewelry designs, org by vio accessories, Rockstar Accessories by Fahinma, sunglasses by Colin Leslie. Armineh Vartanians for Studio DNA, she will be using Josie Maran cosmetics, Ditto recycled fiber hangers, Green Garmento sustainable garment bags, and Waxelene for a winning smile.

As this is her first pageant, Lauren has been working with pageant coach, Tamara Henry, M.A. who produced the "Green Is Gorgeous" campaign for the 2010 Miss America Contestants. "As a former Miss Arkansas USA, pageants are about the celebration of inner beauty, success and a platform from which to launch a career," says the anchor of an Emmy nominated eco transpo TV show. The reality TV personality was also the winner of last month's ex beauty queen episode of "RuPaul's Drag U" on LOGO. "Green T" of Environmentally Incorrect says, "It's all about the energy - clean energy. And comedy fun has been the basis of my pageant training with Lauren. Every week we met under the sun at the beach with a group of very powerful women to share our joy and aliveness... and our connection to the Ultimate Queen of Beauty - Mother Earth!"

For Lauren, the pageant goes beyond Sunday’s event. It is also about promoting sustainable education and specifically MUSE School, a local non-profit educational organization in Malibu Canyon, founded by Suzy Amis Cameron and Rebecca Amis, that is dedicated to empowering children to realize the full potential of their lives through academic excellence, personal responsibility, compassionate relations, global consciousness and environmental awareness. "We couldn’t be more thrilled that Lauren is showcasing MUSE and the future generations. Lauren walks and talks the practice of sustainability and we strongly support her as a contestant,” shared founders of MUSE School, Rebecca Amis and Suzy Amis Cameron. “And further, we stand by her side as she takes this pageant to a different level by was of doing it green.”

Ms Cameron also founded Red Carpet Green Dress in 2009 when she saw the red-carpet opportunity presented by the Avatar press run, alongside her husband James Cameron, to share a message about the increasingly relevant issue of sustainability within the fashion industry. "I wanted to wear a beautiful dress that had some meaning to it," said Cameron. "It's really about bringing awareness to the fact that we can be kind to the planet and still wear something really gorgeous — and to then take that a step further, for people to think about the carbon footprint of their everyday clothes."

Lauren is a wonderful role model for Red Carpet Green Dress,” said Ms Cameron. “To actually have a person representing MUSE in 100% eco-friendly fashions and products is beyond our wildest dreams. We commend MsSelman for standing above the rest in showing compassion for our planet through her message, practice and commitment. By bringing attention to the beauty and practicality of sustainable design, we believe more people will consider sustainable alternatives and practices in their own lives and, ultimately, become part of the solution. Action begins with awareness.”

“It is such an honor to promote sustainability and MUSE School,” Lauren said. “Being on the stage in a gorgeous sustainable gown, eco-accessories and non-toxic make up while making a statement, makes me feel powerful. As youth today, we stand in a powerful place, at a threshold of opportunity: the choices we make can transform the future and do something about the suffering that is taking place in the world. This pageant is just that. It’s a chance to stand for something."

My name is Lauren Selman and I am an eco-entrepreneur, filmmaker and founder of Reel Green Media. I am competing for the title of Miss Malibu USA, 2013 in  the pageant scheduled for August 19, 2012.

I am seeking the opportunity to represent the City of Malibu to become the next Miss California, USA. From my evening gown to what I say I am going to run an eco-campaign and am looking for eco-brands, companies and individuals who are in line with my eco-mission and interested in supporting me.

Now, you may be thinking, “Lauren Selman…a beauty queen? Why are you running?”

When I graduated from UC Berkeley I started my own business, Reel Green Media, committed to bringing sustainability to the entertainment industry.  I have worked on high profile events, hit TV shows and with major film studios, helping them “green” their sets. On my journey, I have discovered that I have the greatest impact as an educator and speaker, and I truly enjoy inspiring others to live as sustainably as possible.  I realized that I can harness that ability and I hope to run for public office someday. I learned that the MISS USA Pageant offers young women the opportunity to establish their careers and develop themselves as ambassadors in the communiy, and it sounded like an excellent place to begin.  .

Why Malibu?

I am currently working with Ecovations, an ecological architecture and design company, and we work closely with MUSE School, located between Malibu and Calabasas. It is my responsibility to help facilitate sustainability programs at the school and to encourage students and teachers to live consciously with themselves, one another, and the planet. From the mission statement to campus design – they focus on inspiring students, teachers, staff and community to live sustainably in the classroom, at work and at home, and to become future leaders in preserving and caring for the planet. How awesome is that! I am proudly competing to bring attention to MUSE School and to use my title to be an ambassador for sustainable education.

You will be listed on my website (www.laurenselman.com) and under my name in the program book distributed to the audience at the event. I will promote your product/service on social media, at events and in my speaking points. Ad Pages are also available in the program book and I think it would be an excellent opportunity to introduce your company to a highly influential audience. If you are interested in an ad, please send me an 8 1/2 x 11 and 300 dpi no later than Friday, July 20, 2012.

Thank you for your support and partnership in creating a greener future for us all,

Lauren Selman
